Inside the $2.2 billion Henry Ford Health campus at its Detroit campus

Combined with the residential and retail section led by billionaire investor Tom Gorse, the area is expected to be completely transformed. Gorse’s team will rebuild the HFH headquarters at One Ford Place into a residential building, which Rainey said was important to the system.

Reinie and Detroit Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem said the development was a result of the success of the healthcare system and the Pistons’ partnership at the Performance Center, which includes Plum Market and Planet Fitness, which they built in 2019. The vacating of One Ford Place will damage the Performance Center across the street and the MSU Research Center in the parking lot.

“We definitely didn’t want to leave this building (One Ford Place) abandoned,” Rainey said. “Suddenly Jupiter aligns with Mars. You have our mission needs, you have an incredible partnership that we have formed with the Pistons, who share the same values in Detroit and are part of the economic life (of the city). And then you add the education and research component from Michigan to the table. Suddenly you see, boy, that 3 times 3 equals 10 or 12.”

The old hospital’s emergency department was also not equipped to meet current needs – Rainey said it was treating about twice the number of patients it was intended to serve. It is one of the busiest of the 10 Level 1 trauma centers operating in the state. In 2022, 78,924 patients visited the emergency room at a Detroit hospital, up from 100,000 in previous years.

The new hospital will house a two-story emergency room capable of serving the needs of Detroit residents.

“It was never designed with the future of ER in mind or the current state of ER services, so the team has done an amazing job managing throughput at this time,” said Dr. Adnan Munkara, Chief Clinical Officer, HFH. . “But we know that both our teams and the community deserve more.”

HFH has been hoarding property across the street from its hospital for 10 years in hopes of someday building a new tower.
