The COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for two and a half years, and staffing shortages persist. Health systems pay a higher price to keep workers. Delivery costs have risen and some service lines have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. As a result, many hospitals were operating at a loss in the first half of 2022, and executives were worried about the financial impact when federal aid funding is cut.
