Dr. Craig Albanese named CEO of Duke University Health System.

Duke University Health System has named Dr. Craig Albanese as its next CEO.

Albanese will come out on top at the end of March. He will succeed Dr. A. Eugene Washington, who in the fall announced plans to retire on June 30 from his senior positions, including President of the Duke University Health System and Chancellor of Health at Duke University.

Albanese has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since joining Durham, North Carolina Healthcare just over a year ago. Albanese was previously Group Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has also held leadership positions at Stanford University, including vice president of quality and performance improvement at Stanford Children’s Health.

The Duke University Health System operates three hospitals, more than 200 clinics, additional clinical affiliated hospitals, and a network of community hospitals that are part of Duke Lifepoint. The healthcare system has more than 23,000 full-time employees and recorded almost 67,000 hospital admissions and almost 4.7 million outpatient visits in fiscal year 2021.
