CMS pushes back deadline for vaccination mandate in 24 states

According to new guidance released by CMS on Friday, health care workers in the 24 states that are recently under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services mandate to vaccinate against COVID-19 will need to get their first shot by February 14 and their last shot by March 15.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that CMS’s requirement for COVID-19 vaccinations for employees of Medicare and Medicaid-certified facilities could go into effect in all 50 states, pending appeals in lower courts. The mandate previously remained in about half of the country after states filed lawsuits against the policy.

Thursday’s decision does not affect compliance deadlines for vendors in states where the mandate was already in place, CMS said. Employees in these 25 states plus the District of Columbia and the territories must be fully vaccinated or exempt by February 28th.
