Cigna launches digital cancer consultation service

Cigna has launched a digital consultation service for cancer patients and their providers, the company announced on Thursday.
The service, provided by a division of Evernorth Health Services, connects patients with lung, breast, colon and other complex cancers, as well as local oncologists, with specialists at National Cancer Institute centers. Experts at more than 20 NCI facilities nationwide can review patient treatment plans and diagnoses and recommend testing, therapy, or clinical trial options.
With a virtual second opinion, Cigna aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs without forcing patients to physically contact outside experts.
The Cigna service is available to select insurer customers and will be expanded to include more customers of both the insurer and its Evernorth eviCore analytics platform.
The company did not immediately respond to an interview request about what lines of business the service is currently available for and what types of customers it will target.
In a pilot project with Cigna Health Plan clients, local oncologists reviewed their treatment plans with PinnacleCare, a health care consulting firm owned by Sun Life Financial Services. In 40% of cases reviewed, NCI experts recommended alternative tests or treatments than those prescribed by local doctors.
The program expands Cigna’s individual cancer treatment, mental health services and financial support, the insurance company said in a statement.
