BHSH Hires New Beaumont Health President

BHSH health system announced on Wednesday the hiring of Benjamin Schwartz as the new president of Beaumont Health, replacing its former leader John Fox.

Schwartz, 53, becomes Beaumont’s top local chief executive effective July 5. He joins Beaumont from Northwell Health, New York’s largest healthcare system, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President and Regional Physician.

Schwartz ranks first, vacated by Fox, who left the organization after the completion of the merger between Beaumont and Spectrum Health of Grand Rapids in February. Nancy Susick, co-CEO, is the interim CEO of the hospital system until Schwartz takes over.

The merger created the state’s largest healthcare system, temporarily named BHSH Health, with $12 billion in revenue and operating 22 hospitals and 305 outpatient clinics. It will also create the largest employer in the state with 64,000 employees.

Tina Freese Decker of Spectrum is now in charge of the entire BHSH system.

Schwartz steps into leadership role at a more favorable time for Beaumont. Fox led Beaumont to close several failed merger deals amid a thorough review of the system to cut costs before finalizing the deal with Spectrum.

Fox made two previous merger attempts before Spectrum came to the negotiating table.

The former board member called for Fox and his team to be fired, while funders called for a meeting with the board to address the growing “crisis” in the eight-hospital system as it attempted to merge with the out-of-state system. Beaumont and Advocate canceled the merger plan in October, blaming financial constraints due to COVID-19 rather than internal unrest.

It is unclear what role Friese Decker and parent company BHSH will play in the day-to-day operations of Beaumont under Schwartz.

Schwartz is also an adjunct professor at several institutions and serves on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Dallas.

He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, M.A. from Harvard University, and Ph.D. from George Washington University. He is board certified in gynecological oncology and obstetrics and gynecology.
