Six Microsoft employees said the Times Gates advances made them uncomfortable, even though they tried to ignore it.
It’s not uncommon for romances in the workplace to erupt, but when a boss engages in a relationship with someone they manage, it can lead to serious problems.
According to Christina Jeffrey, assistant director at Humantold and mental health counselors, if a boss has an affair, it can affect the entire office and even make it a dangerous environment, depending on the circumstances.
If your boss is unhappy in his personal life, it can disrupt the dynamics of work
If your boss has problems in your marriage and is playing with a top deal, chances are the toxicity will run out in the workplace, Jeffrey told the Insider.
“We’re human and prone to Mexicanism, after all. We’ve all heard stories of horrible bosses,” Jeffrey said. “I would say that a lot of this behavior goes back to feeling unheard of and having unmet needs, resulting in poor communication skills and boundaries.”
A business could put additional stress on your head, which could influence their leadership, make them faster, and generally cause them to pay less attention to work, he said.
An employer’s business could break the trust and professionalism required in an office
If your boss has a story, it could change the energy of the office. Since things are intrinsically secretive, having one can cause a manager to leave like he was hiding something from his employees, Jeffrey said.
“All of this can influence the tone of an office by denigrating trust in the culture, perhaps even at a conscious level of awareness, more like a sense of discomfort or a feeling of walking on eggshells,” he said. Jeffrey to Insider.
This area of secrecy can make employees less confident and future-oriented towards their boss, creating communication problems.
If a deal is discovered, it could also lead to a redistribution of the office’s professional atmosphere and cause employees to lose the respect of their manager.
A manager who has an affair with an employee can be coercive and create a dangerous environment
While a boss having an affair outside of the office can influence the workplace culture, a manager having an affair with an employee can make the office dangerous.
Because there is an inherent power difference between a boss and an employee, Jeffrey said this dynamic can make an employee feel like they have to say yes to the relationship even if they don’t want to.
“The Novel is about attraction, chemistry, mutual commitment and consent” Jeffrey first told Insider. “Coercion is about power, dominance and control.”
Businesses, by nature, are secret so this can make them even more dangerous for the employee involved. According to Jeffrey, the best thing to do if you and your boss have an affair is to go to HR or identify a safe person to tell.
