Bain Capital, Hellman & Friedman to buy Athenahealth for $ 17 billion

Athenahealth will be acquired by private equity firms Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman about three years after the company went private in a separate private equity deal.

Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman are planning to jointly acquire Athenahealth, a healthcare software developer based in Watertown, Massachusetts, for $ 17 billion in a deal expected to close in the first quarter of 2022, the companies said Monday. The previous owners of Athenahealth, Veritas Capital and Evergreen Coast Capital, will retain minority investments in the company.

Bob Segert, chairman and CEO of Athenahealth, said the acquisition “marks an important milestone for Athenahealth.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Hellman & Friedman and Bain Capital to begin the next phase of our growth journey,” Segert said in a press release on Monday.

Segert will continue to lead Athenahealth along with the company’s current management team.

Athenahealth, a previously publicly traded company led by co-founder Jonathan Bush, was acquired by Veritas Capital and Evergreen Coast Capital in 2018 for $ 5.7 billion.
