A 33 year old woman he told Buzzfeed she is experiencing chronic eye pain after undergoing laser eye surgery in 2019.
Erin Orchard told the publication that she wanted to be without glasses for her wedding that same year.
Prior to the procedure, Orchard said she was feeling nervous, so laser eye surgery should be done while a patient is awake. Her surgeon ordered her to drink alcohol to calm her nerves before entering, she said.
Once in the operating room, Orchard said she suffered a panic attack. Although she asked the plant surgeon several times, she said a staff member held her still while the operation continued for another 15 minutes.
“I left the clinic, still pretty shocked,” Orchard told BuzzFeed.
Orchard began to experience a hot, burning pain in his eyes three days after the procedure
Normally, it takes three to five days healed by photorefractive keratectomy (PKR) laser eye surgery. About three days after her procedure, Orchard said she had the impression that the hot glass had been pushed into her eyes.
She said simple things like lightning, the air blowing into her eyes, and the movement of her eyes would make her collapse. The light burned his eyes, forcing his partner to cover all the windows of his apartment, he said.
When she went to see her doctor to understand where the pain was coming from, the visit made her more frightening, she said.
“During this appointment I consumed alcohol (both vodka and wine) while I was on track to use equipment to test my eyes and deal with medicated drops,” Orchard told BuzzFeed. “He told me several times not to report it or tell anyone.”
Now, Orchard says she’s been with it chronic neuropathic corneal pain.
“It looks like my eyes are on fire. It looks like they’re burning,” Orchard told TikTok, where the UK-based content creator document his medical journey.
According to u American Academy of Ophthalmology, Neuropathic corneal pain is a condition in which a patient experiences excessive sensitivity in the eyes, face or head due to nerve damage and swelling in the cornea. Orchard says symptoms are debilitating and he can no longer hold a full-time job and has delayed his marriage and family building plans because of his chronic grief.
“I often find myself in tears when someone posts a pregnancy announcement on social media,” Orchard said. “To make matters worse, crying increases my eye pain.”
It is rare for people undergoing laser eye surgery to have complications, but when they do, they are debilitating.
According to u American Council on Refractive Surgery, LASIK surgery – a popular form of laser eye surgery – has a 96% success rate.
Those left with lasting side effects, as Orchard says she has, may have permanent changes such as chronic pain, blurred vision, and permanent vision loss.
Experts say that the possibility of someone developing these side effects is incredibly rare, however.
