Yoko Taro may have finished with Nier.

Yoko Taro is known as the mastermind behind the Nier series (and its predecessor, Drakenguard), although he may have left the first behind him forever. The game’s eccentric director in a bizarre mask teased that he left Nier behind him forever.

In a celebratory message recorded on December 22nd, Taro teamed up with Nier producer Yosuke Saito and series composer Keiichi Okabe to discuss the past year as well as the sales success of Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 (which, according to the team, sold in a million copies). The update looks like a friendly chat between old friends as they jump between talking about traveling abroad to meet fans, what they want for Christmas, and complaints about shoulder problems.

But when Saito asks Taro if he has anything new regarding the Nier series, Taro replies bluntly, “No, nothing!” When Saito asks if he agrees that he’s not doing anything else with YoRHa, Taro half-jokingly states, “We announced it here today, guys! The Nier series is now over! »You can watch the video by clicking the embedded tweet below.

Of course, Taro could easily joke, and Saito immediately responded to this. Tarot admits that giving up Nier can be a lie, saying, “But … who knows … I could have done more if I got a lot of money …”

So did Nier commit suicide? My money is for “probably not, but I don’t expect anything new for a long time.” Especially if Tarot does get bags of cash. In October, Taro released Voice of Cards, a card-based turn-based RPG (but not really a deck builder). He has a bit of “free time” now that he and the Nier Replicant are out the door, and we’re intrigued to see what’s up his sleeve.
