  • Back 4 Blood Launches Oct 12 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S and will be available on Day 1 with Xbox Game Pass.

We were covered in blood less than a minute after leaving the shelter; It turns out that right outside the door a lot of Riddens were waiting for us. Then, after more gunfire and laughter, we turned to look at each other to see how completely covered in shit we were as Ridden’s lifeless bodies were strewn all over the place.

This short skirmish was just a breakout Back 4 Bloodthe multiplayer chaos that awaited us, a session that included numerous hectic gunfights, tons of loot, a giant undead cannibal, pussy bags to hack, pesky crows and many, many zombies. It was everything we were looking for (and more) from the spiritual successor to one of the greatest co-op multiplayer shooters of all time.

Suffice it to say that blood in Back 4 Blood very much deserves, as well as comparison with left 4 Dead and its great sequel left 4 Dead 2, which makes sense given that Turtle Rock Studios is made up of the developers of these games – and they didn’t shy away from that fact in their promo materials. Everything we’ve played so far is similar to the natural evolution of these games, from loot to varied weapons and extensive level design that make the game both familiar and new. It’s like riding a bike … through a zombie apocalypse.

Choose a card

One of the unique mechanics that will add consistency to replays is Back 4 BloodA card system in which during the gameplay you will build a deck of many open cards that you can equip your character to provide various boosts or stat modifiers.

Back 4 Blood

It was a little tricky at first – we just wanted to jump in and start shooting the zombies, but after a few breaks in the middle of the mission in Safe Houses, it gave us a better understanding of which hands were given to us and how best to apply them to our team.

For example, cards like Sunder will cause targets to take 20% more damage for five seconds, Durable gives a small bonus to injury resistance, and Combat Knife turns your Bash ability into a knife, considered a melee weapon. There is ton cards to unlock and shuffle to create your optimal deck (15 cards each).

Back 4 Blood

Then, in the game, you will be dealt random cards from your deck to play with. It’s a very deep system, and we barely had time to scratch the surface during our gaming session, but it’s easy to see what potential this card system can have on the replay factor.

Bloody world

During the joint campaign, we went through most of the first act at various levels, two of which I especially remember: “Crossroads” and “Bells of Hell”. This is not to say that the other levels lacked a great combination of intense firefight and challenging missions – they did a lot – but The Crossing showed such an epic end-level scenario where we had an almost impossible target driving a container ship. that led to the defense of the checkpoint from Ridden’s onslaught on the bridge was impressive.

Back 4 Blood

Then, in Hell’s Bells, after going through layers of thick fog that kept us all on our toes throughout the level, it all ended up defending the old church, where we had to work on nailing up the windows while keeping Ridden at bay. long enough for us to cleanse the church and live to see another day. And all this was only in the first act! I can’t wait to see and play what is still in the store at the time of release.

Get rid of them

Each of the Horsemen we’ve come across so far brings unique traits to the gunfight that keeps everyone on their toes, such as the clumsy Fat Man brandishing a massive club, the massive Riker that can explode on death, covering others with a sticky layer. pus or Stinger, which can give you phlegm, all help to keep the gameplay fast.

Back 4 Blood

Then there are the mass of common foot soldiers who keep attacking you at every opportunity, especially when you reach some intermediate targets that will make a lot of noise, such as turning on the tow truck to help clear a path, causing them to charge at you – or if you happen to disturb the pack. crows feeding on undead (don’t do this).

We even ran into a huge riding ogre – I didn’t catch his name – that was growing out of the ground, but imagine the cave troll from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and you get the idea. Other than that, he can generate huge boulders of blood and throw them at you, dealing massive AOE damage to you and your party.

Cleaning team

It’s not just The Ridden or the card system that can add tremendous value to replay. Back 4 Blood… The Cleaners are characters you can play as – each with their own unique set of abilities to help the group. For example, Mom, who can instantly revive, or Hoffman (Walter Sobchak’s serious vibes), who can create assassination ammo, or Doc, who can heal low health teammates with no items. There are eight cleaners in total to learn how to play, and this helps bring immense depth to an already all-round multiplayer zombie shooter.

Back 4 Blood

On top of that, there are over 20 types of weapons in the game, including assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, pistols and fun melee weapons such as a fire ax, spiked bat and machete. There are also a variety of weapon attachments that vary in rarity, from common to legendary, that you use to improve performance such as handling, accuracy, range, firepower, and mobility. While sifting through some loot crates in the middle of the mission, you will notice that Diablo Since I choose which attachments to use with the MP5, I became addicted to this during the session.
