Video: Dying Light On Switch technical analysis by Digital Foundry

Dying Light Platinum Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch next week, and ahead of its release, Digital Foundry tech experts have shared their own technical review of the game.

So, did Techland manage to create a Switch port? In Docked Mode, Survival Horror runs at 1080p and 720p in handheld mode, but there is a small snag:

“Techland is using what appears to be a new TAAU feature – temporal upscaling anti-aliasing. The idea here is to reconstruct the image across multiple frames to match the target output resolution: either 1080p in the dock or 720p in the portable one. the actual base resolution is lower, often around or below 720p in docked mode, but the result is interesting: it looks close enough to the original when you are standing still, but you will notice some splitting as you move. “

In terms of performance, Dying Light on Switch runs at an unlimited frame rate of 30-36fps, which is not the best at times:

“On paper, this may not seem important, but what happens is that we basically see inconsistent frame times of 16ms, 33ms, and 50ms – and this leads to inconsistent motion. It looks like the wrong frame rate, but is slightly different in how it manifests itself, giving a slightly choppy impression of the action. “

“There are real drops below 30fps – for example in a city at night … if Techland can set a decent 30fps limit, that should make the game overall smoother.”

Fortunately, most of the time frame rates remain “above 30fps” – and it looks like Techland is even looking into a patch to fix this.

Overall, however, Digital Foundry says Dying Light on Switch is a “cleverly designed port” that works and is “much more attractive” when handheld.
