A mysterious floating city, an aloof father figure, and sword fighting are just three of the features that seem to be present in Vernal Edge – a pixelated metroidvania coming to Switch soon – and that level of mystique certainly piqued our interest.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign, publisher PID Games revealed on Twitter that the sword-slashing family drama Hello Penguin is coming to Switch soon. The announcement also featured a console trailer showing the game mechanics in action.
Those looking to explore the floating kingdom of Harikoth will play as Vernal, a heroine on a quest to find her estranged father in order to come to terms with her past. The journey seems pretty classic in terms of Metroidvania, but the retro pixel art and fantasy setting makes us think of Astalon: Tears of the Earth and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, and we’re always excited to see more of these games!
We also like to see 3D gameplay in a 2D game – as you can see in the trailer, Haricot’s floating island navigation looks to add a different visual style to the core elements of the genre around it.
For a more detailed look at some of the features you can find in Vernal Edge, take a look at the following from the game. Steam page:
– Fast metroidvania – Explore the floating islands of Haricot. City or dungeon, leave no stone unturned to get more power! Jump, dash, slide through beautiful pixelated environments and don’t forget: secrets can be anywhere!
– Dynamic and rewarding combat system – Strive for perfection as you master Vernal’s many combos and spells to create the deadliest set of attacks to destroy your enemies! The sheer number of options available to you every time you hit your enemies makes Vernal Edge’s battles a constantly updated source of excitement.
– Make your own way – As long as the wind is in the sail, and the fire is in the heart, you are free! In Vernal Edge, you can take your plane to any island and explore it in the order you choose.
A PC demo can currently be found on Steam for those who want to try this platforming adventure.
While we don’t have an official release date yet, you can rest assured that we’ll be updating any further announcements before you can say f.Antasia-inspired Metroidvania revenge mystery”.
