Two developers are “confident” that the switch port will exceed expectations

Nintendo Life: How does it feel to see co-op play so well? received at a time when gamers are perhaps investing more in single player games?

Joseph Fares, Hazelight StudiosA: It was very nice. From the very beginning in this industry, with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, I have always followed my heart and what I believe in. I’ve always said to just trust your instincts and go with them; my games are designed from the start to be a co-op game, it’s not a random experience. There will always be people who will say, “You can really do this, will people want to play this?” and obviously these are the games people want to play. Exit and It Takes Two have been incredibly successful. These are also games that I I personally want to play. When I came up with A Way Out, I wanted to play with a friend, and there were no such games.

So I would boil it down to believing in your own vision and not caring whether people like it or not; I think it’s important.

[the game has] become almost a test for relationships!

You can definitely say that It Takes Two was created with passion and creativity. I played the game back in 2021 with my wife who was about eight months pregnant at the time; she’s not a gamer, but she really enjoyed it!

Tariffs: Great, how was the communication between you? Are you together now?

Oh yes, we are great, we managed to get through it!

Tariffs: Nice to hear, it was almost a test for the relationship!

Definitely. So, just to touch on the creativity in the game, as someone who grew up with Nintendo games, It Takes Two is very much like a Nintendo game at its best; Would you agree with this?

Tariffs: Oh yeah, it’s a love letter to Nintendo in many ways. I love Nintendo’s approach to game design, it inspires me a lot. I’ve been a big Nintendo fan since the NES days; I have had all the consoles, I have played almost all the games: Mario, Zelda, Pikmin and so on. It definitely inspired [by] Nintendo, definitely. There are obvious easter eggs and achievements in It Takes Two that clearly hint at Nintendo.

Along with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, this game was released on Switch in 2019 with the addition of co-op play. Did this influence the decision to bring It Takes Two to the Switch as well?

Scott Cromie, Turn Me Up GamesA: Yes, I would say that this influenced our desire to work with Joseph and Hazelight again. When It Takes Two came out, it was obvious to us that this was natural, and based on our experience and track record on the platform, we should do it. If we don’t do it, someone else will, and I don’t know if they will do it as well as we do.

How do you determine the health of a switch port? It Takes Two is a beautiful game, so is there any hesitation in porting it to Switch?

Cromie: Our goal is always to exceed the expectations of the fans, especially with a GOTY title like It Takes Two. At the time we signed on to this project, it wasn’t a GOTY name, so the stakes went up pretty quickly. But for us, fortunately, we are able to strategically decide what projects we want to implement; we want our team to be excited and inspired by any game we decide to bring to Switch, and It Takes Two has that in abundance. We really enjoyed working on it, it’s great for the platform and that’s what we’re looking for in a project, we always like to think ‘what can we do that no one else can and what the fans are going to do’. appreciate us for what we do?

Is there anything specific that has been included or changed in this port of the game?

Louis Polak, Turn Me Up GamesA: I think players will find the controls very familiar to the original game; Considering this is a GOTY winner, we didn’t want to tweak too much, we wanted to stay true to the original design. We’ve done some UI scaling for handheld mode to account for the smaller screen, we’ve added a touchscreen implementation for the menus, and apparently enabled local wireless play, Switch to Switch. We’ve also added new audio languages, including Japanese, Spanish, French, and German; these are all new things for the Switch.

Fabulous! Were there any big issues when porting the game to Switch?

Cromie: I’d say these are typical issues with the biggest and most beautiful games like It Takes Two that were never meant to be on the Switch – there are these incredible environments that you go through pretty quickly – so yes, you’ll need to a lot of work to be done to ensure we consistently hit that 30fps and that it looks great at 1080p in docked mode or 720p in handheld mode.

But I think in general it’s the expectations of the players; there are high expectations when it comes to porting such a product to the Switch. With around 111 million platform units sold, this is a large player base, some of whom are already fans of the game and some who may not have played it before. So there are a lot of expectations, but I’m sure we exceeded them.

TariffsA: Yes, let me also say that I think this port looks really good. Out of all the third party ports I’ve seen, this one looks really nice. I myself was surprised, given that the equipment is now quite old, I was surprised that it looks and works very well. There are huge problems in doing this.

We are definitely looking forward to checking it out! So to wrap things up, are there any Switch games you’re all playing at the moment, or something you’re looking forward to?

Tariffs: I’m going to play Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and maybe dip into Bayonetta 3 for a bit. Sometimes the only problem I have with action games is that there are a lot of button combinations to get used to, so Hopefully the new game will make it a little easier. But yes, definitely these two.

CromieA: It takes two! I know it’s a cliché, but I can tell that we played it all over the studio. This and some other projects that we really like will be announced at some point in the future. We tend to target the games we ourselves want to play on Switch, and It Takes Two was at the top of that list.

Polak: Yes, I would just repeat what Scott said; However, I haven’t had a chance to play this game with my wife yet, so I’d like to show her what we’re all working on.
