Twitch shooting planned on Discord investigated as hate crime
On May 14, a tragedy occurred in New York with an 18-year-old white man. shot at least 10 people in Buffalo City, police said. The shooter, whose online username is reportedly “jimboboiii”, was taken into custody after the whole thing was streamed live on gaming platform Twitch, the company confirmed Saturday night. The shooter published a 180-page manifesto detailing his racist and anti-Semitic views, which he attributes in part to the controversial online forum 4chan. The document also mentions what appears to be a private chat server, Discord, where he allegedly detailed his plans ahead of time.
The shooting took place at the Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Street, a densely populated suburb in western New York State. According to local publication Buffalo News, the witness said the store was “full” and busy. Jimboboyi, identified by Buffalo police as Payton Gendron, drove up to the supermarket and immediately shot and killed four people in the parking lot, killing all but one. Gendron then entered the store, shooting several people, including a recently retired Buffalo police officer who was the store’s security guard.
According to Associated PressGendron hails from Conklin, a town about 200 miles southeast of Buffalo. Joseph Gramaglia, newly appointed Buffalo City Police Commissioner, said Gendron, wearing heavy armor, at a press conference. He wore “tactical gear, a tactical helmet, and a camera to which he broadcast live what he was doing.” While many use the Twitch account associated with the well-known shooter username, the Amazon-owned company has shut down the Twitch channel known as “jimboboys”.
The video of the incident has been removed from the web, although there are screenshots and short clips from the scene. And while Jimboboiii’s Twitch channel has been disabled, there are YouTube channel possibly related to it which has not been updated for at least three years. He also got a steam account.

“We are devastated to learn of the shooting that took place this afternoon in Buffalo, New York. Our hearts go out to the community affected by this tragedy,” the spokesperson said. “Twitch has a zero-tolerance policy for all violence and responds quickly to all incidents. The user has been suspended from our service indefinitely and we are taking all necessary action, including monitoring any accounts that relay this content.”
The shooter also mentioned 8chan as the place where he originally intended to post his plans, with the link to 4chan supposedly pointing to where the OG 8chan post would live. According to The newspaper “New York TimesDiscord said it was investigating posts Gendron allegedly made on a private server before the shooting occurred and is cooperating with law enforcement officials.
“We express our deepest condolences to the victims and their families and will do everything possible to assist law enforcement in their investigation,” the company said.

Police called the shooting a racially motivated crime. according to CBS News correspondent that the Buffalo FBI, the police department, and the US Department of Justice are investigating it as such.
