Top 10 Zac Zwiesen Games of 2021

Well, 2021 was awful and awful. I don’t have to remember what made 2021 so bad, because if you are reading this, you already know. We all live on Earth (I suppose), so there is no point in repeating all of this. It’s just, yeah, what a shitty year, huh?

But at least we had some great games! I know some people, even a few people Kotaku colleagues, it seems we don’t like the games we received this year. I disagree. I think 2021 was a great year for gaming. Personally, I played more games in 2021 than in a long time. And many of them were good!

So here are my 10 best games of 2021. (And a few honorable mentions at the end.) As usual, this list is not in a specific order until the very end, where I will list my game of the year.

Resident evil village

Of course, the big tall woman the Internet fell in love with isn’t really that important in the game, but so what? Rest Resident evil village is an still great… Ethan can be basically an idiot with very injured handsbut idiots are usually the perfect people for horror games. So brave, so stupid … that’s all Resident evil 4 References didn’t hurt either.

Lost at random

It’s like a (good) Tim Burton movie tossed into a blender, with some dice and witty lyrics. This is one of those games that crept up on me, and after playing the full game over the weekend, I left very impressed. The combination of real-time combat and dice strategy is great and I appreciated it, even towards the end Lost at randomHe still had new ideas and zest to throw in.

Hitman 3

Oh yes, damn it. This game came out this year… It looks like it was a lifetime ago. But no, Hitman 3 released in 2021Although I think it has the weakest levelset from the modern trilogy Hitman gamesI was still in awe of his new areas. In addition, it was nice to now replay the old levels with more attractive visuals and new features. Hitman 3 Basically, the whole trilogy is packed into one perfect package, what more could you ask for?

It takes two

If you played It takes twothen you already know how dark it gets and how in some moments it completely derails. However, as someone who loves to play games with their significant other but rarely finds games that both of us enjoy, It takes two was great fun. The pace is superb, with dozens of different game mechanics combined into one wild adventure that never gets boring or predictable. And it was nice to have someone by my side who could experience darker moments. We would both say, “OH GOD … Damn it!” together.

Ratchet And Clank Rift Separate

I’ve only played two of these games before, so while others have complained that this great new game is too similar to the last one. Ratchet & Clank games, it was too much fun for me to worry. A plus Rift Apart really looks like a next generation gamewhich is nice considering these new consoles are dangling in place, taking up space. So yeah, it’s about the same, but I haven’t played these other games much, and I think I’m happy about that.

Climbing

Here’s a game I didn’t like at all… Firstly. The first hour or two were exhausting. But I pushed through and discovered a story that I really liked, some twists that took me by surprise, and a combat system that is really great – once you get some better weapons and figure out how cover works! I would also like this, please.

Psychonauts 2

The main characters are Psychonauts 2 and some lard.

On the surface, Psychonauts 2 is a great action platformer with a great sense of style. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find a game that questions whether people can change and what happens when we allow the darkness in us to grow and how others have suffered from our past mistakes and decisions. In 2021, it seems more impossible than ever to forgive people for their terrible and dark decisions and actions. But Psychonauts 2 offers an opinion that it’s worth it. I don’t think I agree, but I would like to.

Halo infinite

Halo infinite this is new Halo the game directly inspired by these large open-ended levels of the original game. However, he also adds new ideas, including an awesome grappling hook and bad battle pass… (I admit that all new ideas are not winners.) However, it is surprising that my only real problem with Endless this is what i wanted MORE! More campaign missions, more maps, more modes and skirmishes. When the game makes you want more, that’s good.

Forza horizon 5

I’ve played all the past Forza games, but for some reason this one hit me harder and stuck with me longer than anything else since Forza horizon 1 or Forza Motorsport 3. I almost put Forza horizon 5 as my best game of the year. Maybe in a few years I will look back and regret my final choice. But while I loved the incredible selection of cars, the incredible races and stunts, and even (a little) the music, one game barely got the better of it. Forza… And I did not expect this at all.

Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel

Well, how wild 2021 turned out to be if guardians of the galaxy is at the top of my list. (And looking around I am not alone.) But here we are. After the first trailers for it were released at E3, I decided that I would play it, but I probably won’t like it very much, or even finish it.

Then it came out and I played it in its entirety. very short the amount of time enjoying almost every minute of it. Composing is the best part of this superhero game, but I loved alien worlds too you can visit and how the game reacts to what you do or don’t do. I’ve seen complaints guardians of the galaxy too chatty, but I didn’t mind because the dialogue was often funny.

But the real secret weapon of this game is that it is filled with heart and charm. He never lets the comedy step on the heels of sad or dramatic moments, sometimes even using comedy to hide the character moments that will stay with you long after you finish it. I hope we have a sequel because I want to spend more time with these eccentrics and their space lamas.

So let’s go! This is my list. If you want to read mine 2020 g. list or Dec 2019 list, just click on these links and enjoy. Or get mad at my options. I guess from what makes you feel better.

Before I leave, here are some more great games I’ve played this year that just didn’t make it into my top 10! Echo Generation, Resident Evil 4 VR, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, The Gunk, Returnal, The Big Con, The Riftbreaker, and Deathloop. As I said at the top, there are too many good games this year!

And if you care, you can see each the game I played in 2021 (and over the past few years) through my Giant bomb the lists… I support them because I am obsessed with my own statistics, but they also prove to be useful in making lists like my top 10. Just know that I include every game I play, not just what I finished or enjoyed.
