TMNT: Cowabunga Collection Has Potential For 2000s Sequel, Konami Producer Says
For the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 2022 has been a completely radical year. We got a great beat ’em up, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge released by Netflix Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The MovieThere are rumors of an AAA console game next year, and we just got our hands on a rough collection of the gang’s classic arcade games in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, which, coincidentally, we liked.
As lifelong Turtles fans, we hope this hot streak continues into the future. Nintendo All An interview with Charles Murakami may hint at just that, as Konami’s senior producer talked about a possible Cowabunga Collection-style sequel.
Speaking about how the Konami team chose the 13 games featured in the recent turtle collection, Murakami and Digital Eclipse Editor-in-Chief Chris Kohler discussed the lack of TMNT games released in the 2000s and were asked if they could get a collection of their own in the future. Although far from being an official confirmation, Murakami gave the following positive response:
Never say never! I’ve waited decades for a TMNT collection, and having other fans share my desire to see this project come together is one of the greatest moments of my career. While sometimes the stars have to align for a project to happen, I’m encouraged when you see the fans push these stars into place.
Based on Murakami’s comment, there is potential for another collection – perhaps similar to Konami’s Castlevania Advance Collection, a “sequel” to the original Castlevania Anniversary Collection – if there is demand. This year’s outpouring of love for the Turtles surely puts these stars in the right spot, and a chance to play the 2003 animated series again? We are ready to push these stars even harder.
In the interview, the pair also discussed the challenges of bringing together classic arcade games into one cohesive collection, music licensing issues, and complex differences between regional game releases. All this and more can be found on the Nintendo website. full interview.
Until nothing else emerges about the potential of the 2000s turtle mashup, we’re going back to the Cowabunga collection, singing killer theme song from the 2003 TV series. Hey, we’ve got to keep hope somehow.
