Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands new Blightcaller class is a little weird

For those who love engagement Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is Borderlands heaven. For those who don’t, this is a solid shooter that lacks the sharp hooks of a realistic live service game. I assume this dynamic will remain much the same after the latest game expansion, which adds the first new game class since launch: blight.

Released in March for consoles and PC. Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is a fantasy spin-off of Gearbox. Borderlands a series of loot shooters. Historically, Borderlands the entries focus on meaningful, story-driven post-release additions. (Wonderland itself is technically an extension of one of these: Borderlands 2stunning Attack on the Dragon Fortress.) But for WonderlandInstead, Gearbox decided to release four small packs called “Mystery Mirrors”. each one is a series of combat cameras– easy plot, a lot of looting and shooting.

The price tag, however, has remained more or less the same.

The fourth such expansion, Shattered Spectreglass, was released yesterday and is available in installments or as part of the playable Season Pass. The most interesting aspect is the deployment Blightcaller classwhich results in the total number of available classes in Wonderland up to seven (and the total number of double classes up to the number I need one of you who knows the math to calculate).

Blightcaller is a strange class. While the standard problem Wonderland classes—knifeman your type of killer Brr-Serker intended for melee oriented builds, etc. – match them carefully with the classes from the previous ones Borderlands games, putrid is not so easy. As a rule, this is a movement in the distribution elemental damage. But he also has a companion. And the emphasis is on defense, not attack.

For example, there are several skills that increase your damage in proportion to how much guard (Wonderland jargon for “shield”) you have. ghost mail will restore part of your ward for each enemy you kill. This is consistent with Flawless Edge; every point you put into a skill increases your damage by 6% if you have a full ward.

His action skill Swamp Totem, summons a small tree companion that unleashes a flurry of tiny evil skulls that target and attack enemies. But here’s the real draw: these skulls will match the elemental type of the weapon you’ve equipped. Combine it with Ghost in the Shell a skill that causes a similar flurry that inflicts poison damage every time you deal a critical hit, and you’re more or less a constant stream of elemental projectiles dealing damage to up to three different elemental types at the same time.

I’ve been fiddling around with the new Blightcaller character, and we’ve played through the end of the “Thy Bard, With A Vengeance” story mission, which lets you choose a subclass. (Because Zack didn’t have access to the add-on, he couldn’t choose Blightcaller as his primary or secondary class.)

There is no obvious match, like, say, clawed as well as Spore Keeperas a result heavy duty forest fire double class– but in the end I settled on Spore Keeper for my Blightcaller as it comes with a little mushroom monster as a companion. Blightcaller is a blast, of course. But it doesn’t fundamentally change the game. Look, this is my fourth Wonderland character. Maybe it’s because I’ve already watched the intro five times (I lost one character because I have no idea what happened), but rewatching really cleared up the gap between the recent ones for me. Borderlands games and original: Wonderlandand view Borderlands 3 before that existed in a dark purgatory between a typical campaign oriented game and a live service game.

For a while I loved very much final mode “Chamber of Chaos”what with its roguelike elements and seemingly limitless legendary loot. But it started to feel like grinding for the sake of grinding, all for the sake of endless service to make big numbers so you can make even bigger numbers. Maybe if you really Indeed lucky – like winning the lottery – multiple times lucky – you end up find one of 85 billion items of equipment. Wonderland has the compulsive repetition of a live service without the momentum spurred on by the steady stream of content you would get with a realistic live service game: cosmetics rotation, time-limited seasonal events (even Borderlands 3 was a bit from those), new areas that don’t cost $10 per person, a social space where you can gather with other players. Adding the Blightcaller class does not change this dynamic.

So the grind, at least for me, is outdated. This is good! Games are allowed to simply end. You have every right to enjoy the game, have a damn good time, and then… move on to the next one. If you start Wonderland for the first time, of course, yes, I would say that choosing the Blightcaller build would be a good decision. But if you’ve been waiting with bated breath for this new class to spice up the game, you’d better wait. Borderlands 4.
