One of the greatest tragedies of all time is that Akira – one of the most influential anime and manga series – has never received a decent adaptation for video games. Of course, people have tried, but the result of the effort has always seemed insufficient for the greatness of Katsuhiro Otomo’s masterpiece.

It was an open-world bike game where the main vehicle looked very much like a cross between Kaneda’s iconic red motorcycle and a light cycle from an equally original Disney cartoon. Throne. Screenshots show the bike moving through a futuristic city not unlike Akira’s Neo Tokyo. It is not known how far development progressed before the fork was deactivated.

The developer who shared these images hints that the game was inspired by Western games and that it was eventually shut down due to the appearance of a thematically similar PlayStation game from Climax Entertainment. runabout in 1997 (also known as Criminal offense 11-79).
