I already wrote how I’m a big fan of Nike’s subtle “tribute” to things they don’t actually own a license to, the latest example being the Prestos line based on star Wars characters like Boba Fett. These upcoming Hello Kitty sneakers, however, are the real deal.

In fact, they’ve been rumored for some time now, and at first it was thought to be the long-awaited public release of this 2004 collaboration, which was supposed to see a wider fall, but ended up in the hands of just a few dozen happy friends and family:

For those unfamiliar with sneaker history, this shoe is infamous! The peach pink colorway above was designed by Fragment’s Hiroshi Fujiwara, while the black was designed by Steven Smith, the godfather of modern sneaker design whose credits range from the Reebok InstaPump Fury to the Nike Zoom Air Spectrum to the Adidas Yeezy. line. It was two more colorways were planned, but were never put into production.as Smith recalls in this 2018 article on High snobiety (disclaimer: I wrote for this site):

Hello Kitty Air Presto was part of the character’s 30th anniversary project in 2004. Initially, according to Smith, the package was to receive a limited but affordable release. But in the end, only about 12 pairs of each colorway made it to the friends and family of the manufacturer Nike and Hello Kitty Sanrio. “I don’t know why they’ve become so limited,” Smith says. “The original plan was for 500 of each style when the project was first presented to me.”

It may seem odd given Hello Kitty’s target audience, but Smith was the perfect shoe designer. “Mark Parker [now Nike CEO, then co-president] knew how much I love Japan and Sanrio,” he says. “I would bring my Hello Kitty waffle iron and make everyone Hello Kitty waffles once or twice a year just for fun. Every day I brought my lunch in a Hello Kitty or Bad Badtz-Maru lunch box. It seemed natural to me that I should be working on a special project for Hello Kitty’s anniversary.”

However, those rumors turned out to be a bit of a misnomer because the first images of the officially licensed 2022 collaboration surfaced this week. and they show off a new design with a blue color scheme and, cutest of all, a custom heel cup featuring a Hello Kitty face and signature bow.
