Crafting a new IP is a serious business, a challenge that is no stranger to the development team behind the new futuristic action RPG Nexus Scarlet!
Bandai Namco has assembled a veteran team to lead this ambitious project, leveraging its first-hand experience in launching the original IP. With Code Vein producer Keita Iizuka at the helm, director Kenji Anabuki has brought years of experience from his work on Tales of, and artistic director Kouta Ochiai rounding out the leadership team with his unique design style, together they led a four-year journey to build the world of Nexus Scarlet.
Nexus Scarlet it takes place in the distant future, one heavily influenced by Tokyo and Japan in the 1990s. The heavy inspiration was taken not only by the appearance and conception of the era, but also by how it was described in pop culture. Often, technological excess was a common theme and used in many designs and settings both in Western science fiction and in Japanese anime at the time.
Nexus Scarlet imagine a world that has evolved directly from that era. To push that vision of the world, the team sought to exploit some key images to amplify their vision. For example, one can see the landscape of New Himuka laden with an excess of visions, holographic imagery that is projected to the minds of the citizens via infrastructure maintained by the government. The holograms celebrate a trope of ’90s design for cutting-edge futuristic technology that can be a little nostalgic.
When applying the characters to the global environment, the team sought to create a credible aesthetic with the anime aspect of the character. To put them at their best against realistic background images, they relied on cel-shading techniques that built a layer between the characters and the environment, achieving a unique juxtaposition of conceptual sensibilities.
Moreover, this duality of styles was especially complementary to the conception of the Other, scattering mutants descending to Earth from space. Composed of various animated and inanimate objects, these monstrous amalgams were designed specifically to evoke the feeling of familiarity and strangeness. Using different types of motion capture styles, they aim to amplify that sense of restlessness in a completely unique way. Nexus Scarlet.
But duality does not end there! The story of Nexus Scarlet it is a story told through the eyes of two separate heroes, Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall. Although it is a story, each character follows their own path with common and individual moments to experience. Each story path can be chosen from the beginning and each game will reveal a larger portion of the story, with a deeper insight into the minds and hearts of our heroes. Their differences can also be felt in their combat, each specializing in different combat styles and weapons.
A weapon can only get so far in a fight against the Other. Often, you will have to rely on your allies for support. This is where SAS – Struggle Arms System – comes into play. Connected to your party members, you can borrow their skills via SAS. This connection is represented by giant red cables that connect to your spine as you touch their powers.
Aside from specific scenario missions, you can often select members of your party before going into battle. Considering the challenges ahead of you, it’s worth balancing your team with the right members before you prepare and go outside. Some skills can be combined with your own psychokinesis to add an extra ulmum or simply work all by yourself. Part of the fun is learning your team’s strengths and building closer ties with them to make your team even more powerful.
By digging deeper into your energy reserves, you can enter a Brain Field – a state where the player experiences increased sensations and immense power. This transformation, if you will, is signified by the player wearing the hood and revealing a colored mask.
Combining fashion with game mechanics is something we’ve seen with Keita Iizuka’s previous work Vena Code, Where clothing played a major role in the game. Probably one of the reasons Scarlet Nexus has an extensive system of customizing both costumes and accessories for your character and the cast of teammates.
Growth is also a much needed element in building a well-rounded JRPG. The player must feel that there is a clear path of progression and reward waiting for them for their efforts. Along the way, both Yuito and Kasane have their own unique Brain Maps that they unlock as they advance through their individual campaign.
Each map adapted to suit the game style of each character. For example, Yuito’s Brain Map path corresponds to his style of playing tight quarters learning faster recovery traits. Kasane, however, unlocks a lot of skill tricks at first to accommodate his mid-level attacking style. Best of all, players can choose which items they want to build in their order of choice, letting them satisfy their gaming habits and style.
All these elements work in harmony with the power of Xbox Series X | S – providing these views at a crisp 4k resolution and smooth 60 FPS – is a sight to behold and really brings Nexus Scarletdebut at the next level. We can’t wait to experience the wonder that it is Nexus Scarlet when it comes out on June 25, 2021. And don’t forget: with Smart Delivery, Xbox has you covered.
