The creative talent of Disco Elysium no longer belongs to developer ZA/UM

It has been confirmed that the key creatives behind the great RPG Disco Elysium are no longer working at developer ZA/UM.

The news originally spread through Martin Luiga, founding member and secretary of the cultural association ZA/UM, who announced in Blog post that the cultural association will be dissolved. Although it is a separate entity from the development company ZA/UM, he mentions that lead writer/designer Robert Kurwitz, artist Alexander Rostov, and writer Helen Hindpere left ZA/UM unwittingly:

“I, Martin Luiga, founding member and secretary of the cultural association ZA/UM, and the assembler of most of the core team, hereby dissolve the cultural association ZA/UM (not to be confused with ZA/UM). company, in connection with which I note that neither Kurvitz, nor Hindpere, nor Rostov have been working there since the end of last year and their departure from the company was forced, which may seem like bad news for loving fans waiting for the continuation of Disco. )”

The news was subsequently confirmed by all three developers in a brief statement posted on Rostov’s Twitter page:

Eurogamer also reported on a statement from ZA/UM itself, confirming that the studio is still focused on developing its next project:

“Like any video game, the development of Disco Elysium was and remains a team effort, with the contribution of each team member being important and valued as part of a larger whole. We currently have no other comments other than ZA / UM’s creative team remains focused on developing our next project and we’re excited to share news with you soon.”

As for what exactly this project could be, the general consensus is that it’s probably a sequel to Disco Elysium. Indeed, Martin Luiga more or less confirmed this in Reply on twitterstating that “I think the sequel is actually pretty sweet, you might even get it the way it was meant to, it might take a ton of time, but RPG fans are kind of used to waiting, aren’t they? “.

Regardless, the impact of Kurwitz, Rostov and Hindpere leaving the company cannot be overestimated. Disco Elysium is, of course, the brainchild of Kurvitz; the game takes place in the same universe as the novel sacred and terrible airpart of a work entirely written by Kurwitz and released in Estonia back in 2013. How much of the Disco Elysium sequel Kurwitz has worked on is unknown at this stage, but his departure could mean a dramatic change in direction for the company.
