Surprise! Crunchyroll is making a video game for the Game Boy Color

In one of the weird news we heard today, renowned anime streamer Crunchyroll has announced that he is developing and publishing a retro video game based on his classic mascot Hime (thanks, Gematsu). What’s even weirder is that it will be playable on the Game Boy Color through Limited Run Games, and cartridge pre-orders are now available.

Just to clarify, yes, you read everything correctly.

Hime’s Quest is an 8-bit adventure game set in 1999 where you play as a streamer’s mascot on a mission to save a small town anime club from the threat of the evil year 2000 – and you thought the news wasn’t may not get any stranger! One look at the trailer above and you can see that the company is going to great lengths to bring these late 90s spirits to life. From real actors to Power Rangers-esque villain – yes, that brings us back.

Notably, we haven’t seen a lot of gameplay footage so far, which is somewhat worrisome when you consider the fact that this is… a game. However, from the small amount that we can peep at the end of the trailer, this is definitely looks quite retro.

To get an idea of the game’s features, check out the following Crunchyroll article:

– Adventures in haunted forests, mirage-filled deserts and more in the biggest Crunchyroll-Hime quest.
– Hack and hack your way through dungeons and take on completely buggy fiends in a league with Y2K.
– Chill out with your Crunchyroll-Hime friends at the anime club, or visit creepy manga creator Junji Ito, who is currently OBSESSED with spirals.
– In some games you can pet the dog, but in this *try* pet the cat. Can you succeed and pat Crunchyroll-Hime’s best friend Yuzu on the head?
– PLAY LOUD! featuring a chiptune soundtrack of the future (time paradox averted) by award-winning 8-bit composer and musician Protodome.

The game will be playable on the Game Boy Color via a physical cartridge created in collaboration with Limited Run Games. The same cartridge is already available for pre-order for $44.99 (about £38 / €43) either in Crunchyroll Orange from Crunchyroll Online Store or in “Limited Run Blue” from Limited edition games. Pre-orders will end on December 23, 2022, with the game expected to ship in May 2023. Be prepared to blow the dust off this item before loading it up.

In addition to this physical release, Crunchyroll also announced that Hime’s Quest will be available to download and play for free in browsers in December.
