Super Sonic will apparently be mandatory for some bosses in Sonic Frontiers

Sega’s open-area game Sonic Frontiers is racing towards its launch on November 8th, and now we’ve got a bit more info on the boss fights and how Super Sonic will impact them.
Speaking with IGNSonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto states that Super Sonic will be mandatory to defeat certain bosses found in open areas:
“Usually in Sonic games you will face the boss and fight him like a normal blue Sonic. There will be bosses in Sonic Frontiers that blue Sonic can’t even scratch. But if he collects and uses all seven Chaos Emeralds, he can become Super Sonic and then fight those bosses. Becoming Super Sonic will be the only way to fight them.”
The hint here is that bosses in Sonic Frontiers can potentially be discovered on the fly, requiring the player to retreat, collect the necessary Chaos Emeralds, and return with the ability to transform into Super Sonic. This is definitely a drastic change from previous Sonic games that usually saved Super Sonic until the final battle. Kishimoto suggests that there will be some bosses in the game that will be as difficult as the final boss:
“So far in the Sonic games, Super Sonic has only appeared against the final boss. Imagine if the first boss in Sonic Frontiers was as strong as those bosses.”
Super Sonic’s ability was showcased in a recent trailer showcased for TGS 2022, during which we see our hero being hurled into a rock by a hulking boss, only to come back later using the full power of the Chaos Emeralds.
