Splatoon 3 has already become the best-selling video game of 2022 in Japan

Splatoon 3 just keeps splattering ink on all sorts of records, especially in Japan where the intellectual property is huge. And it just surpassed the other – with the release of the Japan Monthly Report for September 2022, Splatoon 3 is now confirmed to be the best-selling video game in Japan in 2022.
Data from the report was shared Game Data Library on Twitter, and it shows that Nintendo’s third ink-based shooter sold just over 2.9 million retail units in the month of September alone. This means it outsold Pokémon Legends: Arceus sales of 2.295 million retail units in just one month.
It’s worth emphasizing that this is based on retail units only, but if we also included digital sales (from what we currently know thanks to Nintendo disclosing some sales data at the launch of Splatoon 3), this means that the game has been sold over 4 million times. units already (until October 2).
Were not surprised, let’s say, rather in a checkerboard pattern. We know how popular Splatoon is in Japan, but seeing these huge numbers in such a short amount of time is pretty amazing. It hasn’t been knocked down from number one in Japan yet!
When Splatoon 3 came out on September 9th, it became the best-selling Switch game in Japan. Ever on its opening weekend, almost 2 million physical copies were sold in the first few days.
In fact, there is only one potential contender for the crown of the best-selling video game in Japan in 2022 – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. The ninth generation of Pokemon games releases on November 18, so they’ll have six weeks to try and get their hands on the ink-splattered Splatoon crown. It could be a close race.
