Sony closes online servers for Killzone Shadow Fall and Killzone Mercenary

Guerrilla Games has announced plans to shut down online servers for three of its games next month.

Online servers for Killzone Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall (including Intercept Mode) and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will be closed on August 12, 2022.

From this date, online features, including multiplayer modes, will no longer work, although single-player offline modes will still be playable.

Mercenary and Shadow Fall are the most recent installments of the Killzone franchise to be released. The first was released for the Vita in September 2013, a couple of months before Killzone Shadow Fall became a launch game for PS4.

RIGS: Mechanized Combat League is a sports first-person shooter released for PlayStation VR in 2016.

Sony “shut down” its official website for the Killzone franchise in January 2021.

The Killzone series was once one of the PlayStation’s flagship franchises, with six releases for PS3, PS4, and handheld consoles in the nine years since its debut in 2004.

Guerrilla recently released Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 and PS5, and VGC understands that the studio has fleshed out plans for a trilogy of Horizon games in addition to the Horizon Call of the Mountain title for PlayStation VR 2.

In 2017, when asked about the future of the Killzone franchise, then-Guerrilla boss Hermen Hulst (now head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios) replied: Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences evasive answer.

“They ask me this question [about the future of Killzone] a lot through Twitter and other social networks,” he said.

“It’s great to hear that diehard Killzone fans are showing so much interest. It is a franchise and a universe that we still passionately love at Guerrilla.

“It was not easy to do something completely different. Whether or not we have put a permanent period behind the series, it’s still too early to make announcements about it.

“All I can say is that we have always loved the Killzone universe and the Killzone series and still do. We share this passion for the game with many of our fans.”
