Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand over the weekend, topping the charts and grossing $25.5 million from 31 markets. Compared to the original 2020 film, the sequel’s performance is 2% higher, and Paramount Pictures is said to be “delighted” with the results.
The film is not due to be released in the US until this weekend, but it performed well in key areas such as the UK ($6.4 million / 651 spots), France ($5.7 million / 675 spots), Australia (2.8 million dollars / 289). Spain ($2.2 million/339) and Germany ($2.1 million/553). Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia and South Africa also started at number 1.
No wonder Paramount is so pleased with the performance. The film producer of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 recently talked about the creation of the Sonic Cinematic Universe, and it looks like that is already happening with the announcement of not only the third film, but also the spin-off of the Knuckles series. However, it is currently unknown if Jim Carrey will return to his role as Dr. Robotnik, as the actor recently announced his intention to retire from acting.
