Microids said Joe & Mac will be back soon with a complete remake of the original game aimed at modern systems next year.
This arcade platformer was originally released in Japanese slot machines back in the early 90s, and soon thereafter appeared on the SNES, NES, Game Boy and Mega Drive. Of course, you might remember that we recently embarked on a throwback to its prehistoric era thanks to its inclusion in the Nintendo Switch Online SNES collection – feel free to read our full review if you’re interested.
What about the upcoming remake? Well, Microids says it’s actually “more than a remake.” Named Joe and Mac: Cave Ninja, the new release will include not only the game we are already familiar with, but also “several” new features, including the original Adventure Mode, which contains completely new levels.
No consoles have been announced yet, but with the game tied to Nintendo platforms, we hope the Switch will be a top priority.
Tosuke Matsuoka of G-MODE Corporation says, “We fully trust Microids and [developer] Opportunities Mr. Nutz Studio to develop a remake of Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja. It’s great to see these iconic video game characters being reborn with modern technology. We haven’t seen these two characters for a long time, and their return will delight both old fans and new players. “
