Shin Megami Tensei V Beats Other Popular Japanese RPGs in UK Retail

Yesterday, UK chart data showed that Shin Megami Tensei V managed to reach ninth place in its first week on the market. For the JRPG, exclusive to the Nintendo platform on the UK physical-only chart, this is pretty impressive and further analysis allows us to better understand how well it performs.

Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz has shared some interesting comparisons between the sales of the new Atlus game and previous UK JRPG releases. He notes that SMTV managed 60% more sales than Bravely Default II, 43% more than Monster Hunter Stories 2 and 23% more than Tales of the uprisingWe remind you that all this data is for boxed sales only.

Of course, the last few years have shown that the UK’s attitude towards Nintendo is changing somewhat. PlayStation and Xbox games have dominated the charts and store shelves for a long time, but with the success of the Switch, it’s not uncommon to see Nintendo take over half of the top 10 these days.

Perhaps this is what helped the Shin Megami Tensei V sell so well on its first weekend? Or maybe just because the game is a “modern masterpiece”. Either way, the future looks a little brighter for UK JRPG fans.
