River City Saga: Three Kingdoms for Switch launches this July in the West

Update [Fri 29th Apr, 2022 04:00 BST]: Arc System Works and APlus Games have already confirmed River City Saga: Three Kingdoms will be released here in the west on Switch on July 21 for $29.99 (or equivalent in your region). Japan is also getting a physical version.

Wacky and wild action! Kunio wreaks havoc across the three kingdoms!
The characters of River City take the stage of the Three Kingdoms to wreak havoc! This title is based on the concept of the beloved historical drama Downtown Special: River City! game and crosses international borders to tell the story of a romance of three kingdoms.

Watch as the wacky and comedic action unfolds as our hero Guan Yu (you might recognize him as Kunio) tries to navigate the turbulent times of the late Han Dynasty. The rest of the actors act as generals, tacticians and other characters, giving the Three Kingdoms a unique look to River City! Enjoy a fun and fast-paced look at famous historical events, from the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Red Rocks.

The Beat ‘Em Up action you know and love!
The gameplay is centered around the beat ’em up action for which the series is known. Intricately connected areas form a huge game world. Apart from the battle, you can enjoy shopping in villages and cities. Go on a tour and explore every nook and cranny!

Turn the tide of battle with flashy “tactical” moves!
Turn the tide of battle in your favor with spectacular Tactics! With this tactic, you can affect all the enemies on the screen. Using them in certain areas can even lead to openings like hidden rooms or passages…?

About Heroes of the Three Kingdoms: Battle for Red Rocks In addition to the story mode, this game includes a 4-player mode with local and online co-op “Heroes of the Three Kingdoms: Battle for Red Rocks”. ” Complete a total of 10 stages where powerful bosses await you, sometimes working together and sometimes competing. There’s a lot to dive into here, from turning friendly fire on or off to finding hidden scenes.


Update [Sat 27th Nov, 2021 02:00 GMT]: After celebrating Kunio-kun’s 35th birthday this week, Arc System Works and APlus Games have now fixed a Japanese release date for River City Saga: Three Kingdoms. It will go on sale on the Nintendo Switch eShop on December 16 for 3,740 yen.

A bonus mode was also introduced, which is a traditional belt-scrolling game with “simple controls and exhilarating battles”. Players will defeat hordes of enemies and then boss battles. It will also include leaderboards, 10 stages, and 12 playable characters (source: Gematsu).

original story [Tue 23rd Nov, 2021 05:30 GMT]: Later this week, on November 27th, Kunio-kun will turn 35 years old. As part of this, there will be a special livestream of Arc System Works on November 26 at 5:30 pm JST.
