We’re back with another review, and this time it’s about NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, coming to Switch next week.

This RPG first debuted back in 2017 on PS4 and Steam. This latest version of the RPG gives players access to all previously released DLC as well as costumes exclusive to the Switch version. Here’s a little more about it from the Nintendo website:

Critically acclaimed world NieR:Assault Rifles invades the Nintendo Switch! When mechanical lifeforms from another world attack without warning, unleashing a new type of threat, humanity is banished from Earth and takes refuge on the Moon. As 2B, a member of the YoRHa android military, plunge into a brutal battle to reclaim the planet.

And here’s what critics had to say about the Switch version:

GameSpot thought NieR got “enough rights to the Switch” to be worth checking out:

“Nier: Automata is good enough on the Switch that it’s definitely worth playing here. Combat still feels fluid, loading times are reasonable, and in the few hours we’ve been testing, it was easy to forget it wasn’t running on PlayStation or Xbox. .”

Pocket tactics awarded the Switch version a score of 9 out of 10, noting that it had “little notable parts”:

“Nier Automata is one of the best previous generation console games and has made the leap to Nintendo Switch in a mind-bogglingly impressive fashion. and the magical, inventive nature of the thing sings as loudly as ever.”

Nintendo World Report gave the PlatinumGames title a perfect score of 10/10, commenting that it is “one of the best third-party Switch ports”:

“This is quite possibly the best third-party Switch port I’ve ever played, making it incredibly easy to recommend this game to anyone who’s never played it before. There are simply no two options here: NieR Automata was a design triumph in 2017, and it’s a triumph of porting big games to Switch in 2022.”

bible games also praised it, calling it “a fantastic port of a phenomenal game”:

Nier: Automata on Switch is more than enough to finish endings A to E again, if you’ve already done so – this time without leaving any place you fucking like. And for beginners, this port is so high-end that you’re guaranteed not to leave feeling like you’ve had a worse experience than the buddies who played this wonderfully unique hack-and-slash-and-cry game. -bit ’em up on other platforms. It’s a demonstration that the Switch doesn’t really need to be an “inferior” system compared to its console generation counterparts when the port is in the right hands.”

As well as god geek gave it a 9/10 describing it as “essential” and “still crazy” despite some hardware flaws:

“I can’t tell you that this is the best version and I can’t tell you that you need to repurchase it, although I’m sure Mr. Taro would like me to. But I’m so glad I played it, as it’s a reminder that no matter how old you are or how many games you play, there are special moments that will always stand out from others.

“NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is great. She’s a bit rougher than her older brother’s versions thanks to the hardware, but the heart and soul is there, the story and combat system are excellent, and the idea of actually going to the toilet while playing is somehow like something of a meta-endgame for a title that even the biggest fans couldn’t have predicted. Still important, still obsessed. Play this game.”
