Reggie doesn’t seem to think Nintendo has abandoned F-Zero, says there’s still hope

We’re sure a lot of Nintendo fans would love to see one of the series return. F-zero. Although the Nintendo 64 version was re-released in March via the Switch Online service, no new an entry in the action-packed racing series since the 2004 Game Boy Advance, Climax F-Zero.

So, will this classic Nintendo series ever return? Former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé (who is currently busy promoting his new book game breaking) GamesBeat was asked why Nintendo abandoned F-Zero?

The way Reggie sees this – at least based on his own history with the company – is that Nintendo “never” made a conscious decision to stop supporting certain series. It’s really just experimenting with new and different playstyles and how they can be applied to new or existing series.

He seems to think there’s a good chance someone at Nintendo HQ is experimenting with an idea that could work well for a future F-Zero game. Here’s what he had to say:

“Why was F-Zero abandoned? I would like to share my opinion that, at least during my tenure, the Nintendo developers have always experimented with different styles of gameplay, always thinking about where a unique experience can be applied, either to an existing franchise, or can create new franchise. I’m betting that somewhere in the development centers of Kyoto, some developer is toying with an idea that could be applied to F-Zero. a conscious decision not to continue to support the XYZ franchise. It hasn’t historically worked out that way, not when I was there.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard a former Nintendo employee talk about the return of F-Zero or a future game that calls for something unique. In fact, former Nintendo employee Takaya Imamura said last year that the racing series still has life, but it needs a “big new idea” to revive it. Shigeru Miyamoto also mentioned in 2012 that he felt the series had not really developed.

What do you think the new F-Zero game needs to do to grow the series? Leave a comment below.
