recoil, reloads, resistance and realism – PlayStation.Blog

This Friday, our anticipation of PlayStation 5 update for Metro Exodus goes live, as a free update for all current owners of the PS4 version, or available for purchase on disc as the Full Edition for beginners.

Here at 4A Games we use every aspect of the PlayStation 5 hardware to dramatically improve the overall experience. We doubled the frame rate from 30 to 60 FPS, and quadrupled the resolution to 4K, while completely redesigning our engine to provide a completely beam-driven lighting experience that offers unprecedented realism; we exploited the fast SSD by flash to reduce charging times; and we support 3D Audio to further increase players ’immersion.

In this article, we’ll talk in more detail about our support for the DualSense wireless controller, and how these new hardware features allow us to push readers ’immersion even further.

As you may have guessed, creating that sense of immersion is one of our key goals for the Metro series. We’ve refined our business over the last decade, using narrative, audio, and visual tricks to attract more readers into the game world.

A big focus has been on how the player’s character, Artyom, feels connected and integrated into the game world – stripping HUD / UI to a minimum, trying and physicalizing so much information to break down barriers between the eyes of gamers. players and the world; and we put a lot of effort into our first-person animations, from complex weapon reloads to physical interactions with the environment such as opening doors and manipulating or collecting objects to make the world feel tactile. and alive.

The DualSense controller allowed us to push even more that tactile sensation. Advanced haptic feedback gives each weapon a unique feeling when unloading, recoil, reloading, or jamming. Players will also feel the subtle differences in the same weapon class as they adapt and customize on the fly using our crafting and customization mechanics on the field; adding a heavier stock to increase stability, or a suppressor to reduce the muzzle will scale all changes as the controller responds to the player’s hands.

Some of Metro’s signature weapons are the handcrafted pneumatic Tikhar and the spring-loaded Helsing, and we found the perfect use for the adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller to simulate increased pressure or resistance when applying / loading these weapons. from unique fires. Maintaining high air pressure in the tank is essential to preserve Tikhar lethality, and this must be raised manually by pumping the right trigger; as the pressure increases, so does the resistance to the trigger action so that players can feel when the maximum pressure has been reached.

We also use adaptive triggers to mimic resistance when rowing, operating certain machines, or driving the purchased Metro ground vehicle in the Caspian desert.

Of course, for Metro Exodus we have adapted this new feature into our existing concept, but as creatives we are excited to explore new game mechanics that can be improved with the DualSense controller in mind from the start to better deliver our immersion goal. complete of the reader. .

Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoy experiencing Metro Exodus with the added immersion of the DualSense controller when it arrives on PS5 on June 18th.
