Random: Turn your NES into a synthesizer with this app

If when you first played Super Mario Bros. 3 or the original Metroid, you wanted to create music that could rival Koji Kondo or Hirokazu Tanaka, but still sound just like, well, in 2022 you are finally lucky.

Available on and developed by user Avicr. Synthesizers is a ROM that runs on an Everdrive N8 Pro flash card. You can run this app on your PC to turn your little NES into a complete MIDI music machine.

You can pay any amount to try out SynthNes and all you need to get started is a USB cable, a Nintendo Entertainment System, a PC (Windows only for now) and an Everdrive N8 Pro cartridge that you can buy here. With all these tools at your disposal, you can become a Nintendo maestro yourself! If you’ve been holding on to your kid’s console, that is.

The app comes with a lot of fun features that celebrate the glory days of 80s Nintendo games and make music making as easy as possible, including:

  • Control all five NES audio channels via MIDI or the built-in virtual keyboard
  • Expandable by connecting more NES
  • Easy to use PC interface
  • Manual PDF
  • Modulation
  • Automation
  • presets
  • Polyphonic work
  • Unison mode
  • Animated Graphics
  • Hidden surprises

You can learn how to get the app working on the Avicr page and get even more details by reading the PDF manual. The manual looks amazing and is exactly the same as for the NES, with pixel art and character descriptions.

For now, there is only an app for the NES, but can you imagine a SNES equivalent being developed? Yasunori Mitsuda, a la Chrono Trigger, eat your heart.
