Nintendo started another roundAsk a Developer‘, a series that takes key members of the game’s development team into the creative process of some of the biggest Nintendo Switch games. This time, of course, we’re looking at Splatoon 3, due out this week. You can read the full interview with the game developers Right here.

Discussing how the series has grown with the audience and how Nintendo chose the creative direction for Splatoon 3, game director Seita Inoue revealed a rather unexpected source of inspiration for the game: Splatoon 2’s final event, Chaos vs. Order (yes, yes, we know it was not the one final last..!).

If you remember, of course, Chaos defeated Order (poor Marina) and this development inspired Inoue how to approach the third part of the series:

This game takes place in the chaotic city of Splatsville, a densely populated area filled with buildings from different eras. We chose chaos as the theme for this game because Team Chaos won the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest, the final online battle. Splatoon 2 event.

Inoue went on to explain that the team has no idea what the outcome of the final Splatfest Splatoon 2 tournament will be, going so far as to state that they have begun imagining what the game might look like if The Order won. Personally, we are not sure that it would turn out so great!

While it’s good to hear full confirmation from Inoue himself, Splatoon 3’s chaotic direction was nonetheless hinted at when the game was first revealed back in February:

“Here we see Splattsville, the newly discovered ‘City of Chaos’. It looks dated but seems densely populated. Research shows that Splatsville’s development has accelerated rapidly since the final Splatfest a year and a half ago, despite being located far from Inkopolis.”

If you missed it, be sure to check out our full Splatoon 3 review; we gave the game a 9/10, calling it “the pinnacle of shooters on the Switch” but highlighting the lack of a much-needed “big new feature”.
