Random selection: 14,000 audio files when unpacked turn into a hell of a flawless game

Earlier this week, a Zen unboxing game launched on Nintendo Switch, unsurprisingly, is called Unboxing. Since then, it has attracted a lot of attention from both players who don’t know what GameCubes are and an amazing amount of detail in the game with isometric pixel art.

The final detail that goes viral is one that usually doesn’t get enough recognition: Fowley’s work by BAFTA-award-winning composer and audio designer Jeff van Dyck, who has credits to Total War, Hand of Fate, and a number of EA Sports games.

A picture is said to speak a thousand words, but to showcase audio design you need a video, so here is a video from Senior Sound Engineer Francesco Del Pia, who (at the time of writing) has over 9,000 likes:

In accordance with fellow audiophile Maximilian S.P.Van Dyck has collected over 14,000 audio files for these sounds alone. Again: 14,000 files just for picking up and down items. Here’s how Van Dyck described the process:

“We had Reaper to render audio files into a deep folder structure that represented containers and hierarchy in #Wwise… I then used one templated container to map all sounds to the correct surface switches. I felt dizzy every time we went through this process, it was magical! “

He went on to say that “there is a lot of space and time for sound in the game” due to the “impressionistic atmosphere” and low-resolution art. “This gives us the ability to add that detail back through sound design.”
