It became known that the German musician Remute is creating the first “album on a trolley” for the Nintendo 64.

Remute has previously released similar carts for the Genesis / Mega Drive, SNES, PC Engine and Game Boy, but says “R64” will be “the most varied and playful album so far.”

He will showcase 15 new songs, “from ultra-catchy electro-pop reminiscent of Yello, Kraftwerk or the Yellow Magic Orchestra, to sinister techno and house excursions that take you back to the hazy warehouse raves of the 90s.”

Remute points out that this isn’t a cheap trick either:

No tricks – this is not a built-in MP3 player, terribly compressed WAV files and other cheating: as with all previous albums of Remute cartridges, the sound on this cartridge is generated and played in real time by the console, and all this happens within the meager 8 megabytes of space for storage! With the R64, the Nintendo 64 console is your very own synthesizer / sampler hybrid that will gladly serve you every time you turn it on and hit the play button! 93.75 MHz baby!

Remute teamed up with “Nintendo 64 genius developer” Raski, who created the sound engine and player interface, as well as “an amazingly trippy 3D experience to accompany Remute’s music.”

R64 Carts are region-independent and fit all Nintendo 64 console models – NTSC-U, PAL, or NTSC-J. The cart can be pre-ordered now for € 39.99 via Remute’s Bandcamp pagewhere you can also hear some samples. The release is scheduled for March 25, 2022.

A very limited Plus Edition that comes with a 7 ” vinyl with special versions of songs from the two albums. “Superposition” and “Tradition Und Moderne” along with a third exclusive vinyl song titled “Tradition And Superposition” will set you back € 49.99.

R64 is part of a trilogy of albums, followed by Unity (Game Boy Advance) and Generations (Sega Dreamcast) later in 2022. Remute will also reissue their albums of cartridges for the SNES and Genesis “The Cult Of Remute” and “Techno-Optimistic” soon.
