Masahiro Sakurai, the brilliant mind behind a whole library of our favorite Nintendo games, has taken a different development story in his latest YouTube video. This time it’s all about Kirby Air Ride as the legendary creator discusses how the idea came about, development challenges and the game’s enduring impact today.

Air Ride was something of a twist for the Kirby series (especially since it was released around the time of the more traditional GBA games Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror), but we think it’s fair to say that this wacky game Turn Racer on pink puffball format worked.

Although this game may not be remembered as fondly as other Nintendo racing series such as Mario Kart or F-Zero (yes, we demonstrate that definitely real Switch release for the latter) Sakurai clearly has a soft spot for the title. As a designer and director, Sakurai is a project through and through (he considers him “one of the [his] creative work”), and it’s interesting to hear how the creative has changed the pace of the game after a year of hard development.
