Hands up – who ever had a Pokémon Mini? The microconsole was launched in 2001 in Japan and North America – right before the release of the GameCube – and the following year in Europe. it came in three colors, ten games were released for it (only 4 made it to the Americas, with one more going to Europe), and is still the smallest cartridge-based system Nintendo has ever made.

Despite the short run and tiny library, fans found a way to reverse engineer the tiny little system years ago, and many have been making homemade games for the system for some time now. But one independent developer has gone one step further and wants to create an entirely new entry in his miniature system horror series.

Sungrand Studio is no stranger to making games on old hardware. Developer Silver Falls Seven new games are currently in development for both the 3DS and Wii U, with one even getting Balance Board support. After the announcement of these seven new entries, many fans asked if more ports or new games could be made in this indie horror franchise for older consoles. And entrust some dedicated fans with the new Silver Falls game on the long-forgotten Pokémon Mini.

Nevertheless, Sungrand Studio listened and launched Kickstarter make this dream a reality. It’s right; we’re getting a brand new Pokémon Mini game in 2022 or 2023.

Kickstarter itself is relatively modest – for 700 Australian dollars, Sungrand Studio promised to purchase Pokémon Mini and create one new game for the system. Not only that, the ROM will be free for everyone. The developer also says it will be getting a second console to test the infrared feature to allow this new game to be played in multiplayer, but can’t guarantee it will be able to do so.

If Kickstarter raises enough money – AU$1,400 – Sungrand will even change its release schedule and aim to release this Pokémon Mini entry later this year.

Given the limited number of pixels in a diminutive console, we can imagine that a horror game could be pretty terrifying on this tiny little machine. Of course, it will be difficult to find one in excellent condition, but Sungrand copes with this task.
