Random: A rather angry Mario is hiding in this Sega Saturn game since 1995

Sega and Nintendo are best friends these days, but it wasn’t always that way. Once upon a time, the two companies fought for domination of the living room with their home systems, and their mascots – Mario and Sonic – were sworn enemies who could not be seen dead in the same game (how things changed, huh?).

Given the rivalry that existed at some point, it’s only natural that the developers of the two companies might find ways to secretly poke fun at each other, and one such example is hidden away in the files of a rather average (but very attractive) Sega. Saturn 2D platformer Astalreleased in 1995.

As you can see in the image below, someone on the development team took on a rather sinister-looking Mario and hid it in the data files.

The description reads:

Astal, released on Saturn. Found that the image that appears to represent Mario was hidden at 0xFE90 APT.BIN on disk.

We reported some time ago that Mario was also found in the original. Sonic the hedgehog – but we still think it could have been a coincidence more than anything else.
