Hello and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl!

We took a look at the classic SNES game Super Castlevania IV last week, and you guys really didn’t like the Japanese cover, did you? The North American option won a landslide victory with 94% of the vote; one of the most decisive Box Art Brawls we may have ever seen! Hey, at least the game itself is brilliant wherever you play it, right?

This week we’ll be looking at Earthbound – or as it’s called in Japan, Mother 2: Gigu no Gyakushu is a game that fell on hard times when it was originally released in the West, but has since gained a significant following. Our own video producer Zion quotes Mum as his favorite game franchise of all time, so that’s saying something!

In this edition of Box Art Brawl, we’re pitting North America against Japan because, well… Those are the only two regions where the game exists in its original form. Have fun with it and we wish all moms a happy Mother’s Day (even those who don’t celebrate it on the second Sunday in May)!

Be sure to vote in the poll below; but first let’s look at the design of the box itself.

The North American box art of Earthbound features the iconic Final Starman, with protagonist Ness only visible through a visor. This is a colorful, almost psychedelic box art with swirling patterns reminiscent of the background during game battles, as well as a futuristic logo that goes very well with Starman.

It’s also worth noting, of course, that the box itself was significantly larger than other SNES boxes at the time, due to the inclusion of a strategy guide.

Okay, we’re not going to lie, we love the box art for Mother 2. It has a great minimalist design that definitely reminds us of Square-Enix. last fantasy row. The red background is distinctive, but the logo itself really draws attention: the word “MAMA” almost disappears due to the large number “2” just below, along with an amazing planet instead of the letter “O”. .

We think it will be pretty close, but don’t forget to make your voice heard and vote in the poll below!

Thanks for voting! See you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
