Pokemon on a pebble? Pebblemon presents a clone of the classic game for your smartwatch

Nintendo’s iconic Pokemon series debuted in Japan nearly two and a half decades ago. It took the game only a few years to experience immense popularity not only in the United States, but also in several other countries. And while Pebblemon, designed and developed to play on Pebble smartwatches, may not be exactly like that, its developer describes it as “a mini Pokemon adventure on your wrist.”

Now, if you’re wondering if people have Pebble smartwatches – Fitbit bought the brand in 2017 – the answer is yes, many users still have and use them. For Pebblemon, Game Developer Harrison Allen speaks that he created a copy of the graphics library used in Pokemon Yellow, the first title in the popular series of games. And just like Pokemon, you can explore “different areas in the Johto region” by playing Pebbelmon using the buttons on your Pebble smartwatch.

According to Allen, all 251 Pokémon from the Game Boy Color (GBC) can be found in the game. As you level up, you will unlock more different sprites. “Find hidden objects to help you on your journey,” he added.

Interestingly, Erik Migikowski, founder of Pebble, posted a video on Twitter, which shows how Pebblemon works on Pebble smartwatches with incredible ease and without technical glitches. “Five years later, developers like Linksky are still making new game engines and beautiful games like Pebblemon for Pebble. Incredible, ”says the caption to the video. The 31-second video shows a man completing a stage using two buttons on the right side of the smartwatch.

In a subsequent tweet, Migikovski said, “By the way, this is essentially a full port of the GBC version of Pokemon.”

The video brought back the memories of the Pebble smartwatch for many.

“One of the best open source watch platforms. I miss her and have direct access to all sensors via BLE, ”wrote former Pebble user @bleeshem.

Another user, @GeekyLuigi, said, “Absolutely stupid, I like it.”

So if you also have a Pebble smartwatch and want to try your hand at Pebblemon, you can download it from Rebble.io
