This asymmetric cooperative platformer strikes with the genre’s high notes: variety, speed and criticality. cooperation… One moment, players fight enemy squirrels aboard a toy plane, and the next moment they throw nails like darts to create a path for their partner. You might not expect laughter and light-hearted fun from the tale of two parents and their young child going through an impending divorce, but developer Hazelight does. Doki Doki Literature Club

June 30, 2021

And now – the poem “Doki Doki Literature Club Editor’s Choice” by Kristen Zitani from PlayStation:

From a school hall to a poem at the end of the day
In this literary club, you will meet
Four girls who excite hearts not with a quiet hum
But with a terrible and creeping rhythm
Visual novel, but with a twist
Making Friendships and Writing Poems
Try to pick one, but you can’t resist
Disruptive spin so unattractive
Adorable girls with rhyme schemes to match
Gave the way for darker narrative designs
You have to play more than once to really catch
Yourself in the digital vines of this indie
Doki Doki Plus Literature Club!
Psychological horror must

The Greek myth is stunningly at odds with roguelike game design. The latest release of Supergiant features smooth and fluid gameplay whether you’re wielding Zag’s trusty blade, powerful bow, or any of his other legendary weapons. The player’s choice permeates the experience, from the choice of gifts (Athena’s distracting push to life!) to buy permanent improvements such as damage dealt or the ability to resist death. Memorable, multi-faceted characters with a dizzying amount of dialogue add depth and charisma to every run. Want to whip up the wind with the first boss of Megaera? Take action. Make sure you have plenty of free time when picking up your controller, as this is an editorial choice that is difficult to pass up.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

September 21, 2021

The debut game from indie developer Ember Labs immediately impresses with its colorful characters and complex animations. Expressive (and highly collectible) Rot immediately hits the strings of the heart. Charming gazes can be deceiving, however, as clashes with enemies and boss battles with corrupted creatures force players to parry, counterattack, and dodge with precision. Beautiful yet addicting, the game rewards players with an intimate storyline, relaxing exploration and puzzles to balance the experience.

Psychonauts 2

August 25, 2021

The intelligent sequel Double Fine is one of the studio’s finest pieces. Raz immerses himself in the vibrant minds of his teammates and foes, from tooth-riddled nightmares of teeth to a bowling-inspired city teeming with germs. Acrobatic exploration of these creative worlds is a platforming joy. Raz’s abilities, such as swimming or bouncing on a bouncing ball, appear fluid and responsive. Double Fine is also a captivating story that combines signature humor with touching moments. While fans of the original Psychonaus and PS VR Rhombus of Ruin will have a lot of fun with this sequel, it’s also accessible and useful for newcomers to the series, so be sure to dive into it.

Little Nightmares II

August 25, 2021

The world of this side-scrolling horror game can be messy and intimidating, but it will be difficult for you to look away until the credits start. Tarsier Studios has come up with a variety of addicting heart-beating puzzles, from scaling book towers to escape from a terrifying teacher, to opening hidden doorways with a perfect chess move. The protagonist from the first installment returns as an AI companion that you can even hold hands with for a little extra comfort. You may need it as this editors’ choice relieves the chills.

Life is Strange: True Colors

September 9, 2021

Alex’s story in Life is Strange: True Colors is very emotional. Not only is she trying to uncover the truth about her brother’s death, but emotions also play a central role in the gameplay itself. Colored auras provide players with information about whether a character is angry (red), sad (blue), happy (gold), and more. This bright new mechanic and unexpected twists in the story merge into an unforgettable story. Deck Nine’s narrative adventure is a must for fans of detailed characters and thoughtful dialogue options.

Tales of the uprising

September 10, 2021

The Tales series has long been known for its flamboyant combat and chatty ensemble cast. Tales of Arise doubles down on those traits with stunning effects that throw all the colors of the rainbow onto the screen, then brilliantly contrast those over-the-top encounters with the intimate interpersonal conversations between each member of the group. By the time you cross the 20, 30, or even 40 o’clock mark, the entire team feels fulfilled, not only as individuals, but as a whole. A heartwarming story, solid combat system, and the cast you care about? Honestly, what more could you ask for from a JRPG?
