Fans of handheld games and cool gadgets have no doubt seen the Playdate reviews last week. Panic’s cute, outdated console is a celebration of simpler gaming times, and we were lucky enough to get it early – we found it to be an adorable little yellow system that sends us “back to a time when handheld video games were a simpler, more innocent pastime, and every new the experience felt fresh and exciting.”

Apart from the new games it comes with, Playdate is also an open platform where developers of all sizes can create and distribute easily downloadable software for it. One of these programs is Playnote Studioa nifty little app for those who miss the brilliantly simple Nintendo DSi animation tool, Flipnote Studio.

While the Nintendo Animation App may not be available for download these days, short flipbook-style masterpieces created with Flipnote Studio can be viewed on Playdate using James Daniel’s developer software. The application is based on the previous web playerand it uses the console crank so you can move forward and backward through the frames of the animation.

The Nintendo Flipnote apps have attracted a dedicated and passionate fanbase and are still evocative today. The April Fool’s 2020 prank that “leaked” the Switch version sparked fan anger directed at the pranksters. That same year, a fan submitted an incredible 34-minute animation meticulously crafted in Flipnote Studio 3D, the 3DS version. Yes, that’s selflessness!

You can go to for more information on how to download the app on Playdate and enjoy Flipnotes to your heart’s content.

“Upload the app on our Playdate? What if you’re not in distribution group 1?” Ah, while we may have one game date at Nintendo Lite Towers, some of us at Team NL have to wait quite a while for our personal game dates to be sent. In the meantime, we will download the application and prepare it, prepare and wait to launch a few selected flip notes.
