Panic has announced that pre-orders for its Playdate PDA will begin next week.
According to a newsletter sent out to subscribers, pre-orders will begin on Thursday, July 29 at 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT / 18:00 BST.
The first batch will be 20,000 units, but Panic reassures potential customers that the system will not technically be “sold out.”
If the customer becomes one of the first 20,000 PDA customers, he will receive his Playdate among the first batch shipped at the end of 2021.
Anyone who wants to pre-order after reaching this milestone will still be able to place an order – they will simply be added to the waiting list and receive their device when the next batch is produced.
Playdate itself will sell for $ 179, with an additional cover for $ 29.
When starting the PDA will only ship to 16 countriesincluding USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, UK and 11 other European countries.
Playdate features a 2.7-inch black and white screen with a 400 × 240 resolution, roughly four times the pixels of the Game Boy screen. It has a D-pad and two buttons, as well as a handle that folds down on the side of the device.
Panic, which has primarily developed software for Mac and iOS for the past 20 years, but also publishes Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game, calls the crank “a rotating analog controller that brings a whole new sound to games.”
As part of the $ 179 price tag, shoppers receive a 24-game “season” of free games (instead of the originally advertised 12 games).
Titles are specifically created for the system by indie developers including Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi and Lucas Pope (Return of the Obra Dinn, Papers Please), and two new games will be released each week via Wi-Fi as part of Season 1.
