Losing a job is always an unpleasant experience, but being fired in public is very embarrassing, especially when you don’t know it’s coming. This is exactly what happened this week in the world overwatch League (OWL), where the New York Excelsior team unceremoniously fired top support player Seo Sang Min “Myunb0ng” in perhaps the worst possible way: a damn tweet. And here’s the thing: this happened just hours after the NYXL signed a new player to the team. Yes.

As noticed edge correspondent and former Kotaku dot com employee Ash Parish, on August 10, NYXL announced that Song Jae “Ansunjae” Jae joined the team. as the new main support player. Lineup changes happen all the time in OWL, of course, but adding one more person to the the critical role of keeping everyone alive while increasing the effect of command status will give Myunb0ng a much needed break. So, that was great news! I mean, why not increase the number of people on your bench? However, this was not the case, as a few hours after the announcement, NYXL said goodbye to Myunb0ng and thanked him for his “dedication and hard work.”

You can probably imagine Pikachu surprised face Myunb0ng had when this now-deleted tweet got into his TL. In fact, he was so shocked by the announcement that he responded with several question marks. Myunb0ng went ahead and quote – retweeted by NYXL with a different question markapparently indicating that he was unaware of this unexpected ending.

After NYXL took down the tweet saying goodbye to Myunb0ng, the team released a statement detailing the matter. The tweet stated that NYXL “failed to properly contact the team prior to this announcement being made.” They apologized to Myunb0ng for the misunderstanding, wished him the best in his future endeavours, and promised that this mistake would not happen again.

Myunb0ng refined that he was “notified during a feedback session with the team”, that OWL itself had expelled him, and that a social media and marketing error resulted in a surprise announcement on Twitter. For this reason, said Myunb0ng, the news that he suddenly fell for NYXL ‘feels very unreasonable”, even if it seems incredibly sharp.

However, the community was taken aback by this news. Most divided in complete confusion whom happened while others seemed upset due to a “mistake” made here by NYXL. OWL members such as Caster Mitch Leslie as well as Tank Houston Outlaws Shin “Piggy” Min Joon, tweeted in support of Myunb0ng. Other quite a bit of dragged NYXL through the dirt of the internet.

Kotaku reached out to Ansoonjae, Myunb0ng, NYXL and OWL for comment.
