We’re in the midst of what’s considered a slower time of year for gaming developers, but there are also some gems to discover in the coming weeks, such as OMNO. OMNO is an adventure game made by German solo developer Jonas Manke also known by his studio name, StudioInkyfox. He’s been working on this, his first game, by himself for the better part of five years, and he also had a successful Kickstarter fundraiser in late 2018. Now, ready to release this month, OMNO is near at the end long awaited line.
OMNO is a 3D platformer with “puzzles, hidden secrets, and obstacles to overcome,” according to its website. Its main globe-headed character uses a magical character with tons of functional apps that allow the player to fly or swipe through the air and dash for large covers. You can also navigate elegantly on the artifact to cross the more open areas of OMNO. The newest trailer shows many of these actions and places you can expect to explore, both safely on the ground and high in the clouds.
OMNO’s artistic direction adopts a majority of flat shades and sharp edges in the environment to contrast with more rounded shapes present in biological and animal characters. Manke comes from an animation background, and shows up in the main character’s movements when using an ever-present magical character. There is plenty of fluidity and small blooms to look for in the movements of the protagonists as well as in the animals they encounter.
While the game isn’t out yet, the trailers that Jonas Manke has released take a look at what looks like an intriguing adventure. He has also been chronicling his journey developing OMNO in TikTok, showing some of its progress and milestones over time. Check those out for an interesting look at indie development from the smallest of teams.
OMNO is released on July 29 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. Those who have Game Pass you will be happy to know that you are also out on the subscription service.
