One of the best games of 2022 is coming to Switch next month

Remember how we begged for Team Ladybug’s great-looking shmap to come to Switch? Well, looks like someone was listening! PLAYISM will bring the 2D side-scrolling shooter to the online store on February 2nd.

The postponement was announced a few months ago, but publisher PLAYISM only announced the release date for the game today. The stunning visuals shouldn’t surprise anyone who has played the game Team Ladybug is the team behind Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, two pixel art games that will take your breath away in motion.

Drainus is no different, although it’s not strictly pixel art, instead using pseudo-3D sprites to create an incredibly detailed and unique look. Important for shmup, a genre full of chaotic effects and incredible enemy designs. Look!

However, the game’s unique formula lies in the ship’s ability to drain energy, which you can use to customize your ship as well as unleash more powerful attacks. There are three difficulty modes, and Team Ladybug positions the game as a game “that can be enjoyed by players of all levels”.

We have more information on this incredible hodgepodge below, as well as our own thoughts when we tried the game on Steam last year:

The modern evolution of 2D shooters designed for all gamers

DRENUS this is the first original IP created by Team Ladybug, developers Touhou Moonlight Nights (a derivative work of the Touhou Project, over 300,000 copies sold), and Record of the Lodos War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (A derivative work of the very popular Record of Lodoss War franchise).

Players control the DRAINUS, a fighter with the unique ability to absorb energy. Any enemy energy fire can be absorbed and directed in the other direction. Alternatively, the stored energy can also be used to tune and improve DRAINUS functions. Team Ladybug’s goal DRENUS was to create a shooting game that players of all levels could enjoy.

The game has three difficulty levels: “Easy” and “Normal” for beginners and casual players, and “Hard” for seasoned veterans of the genre. Upon completion of the first playthrough, players will also unlock two additional modes focused on competitive play.

In May 2022, the PC version was released on Steam without any prior announcements and received very positive feedback from the gaming community for its overall excellence and quality. We are thrilled to be able to share this experience with the Nintendo Switch community on February 2, 2023.

Game details

Take control of the DRAINUS, a ship that can absorb energy attacks to destroy countless enemy ships hurtling through space. The absorbed energy can be used to improve the functions of the ship, such as adding new weapons.

■ History

The planet Halpax, located in the far reaches of space, is suffering from the oppression of the Harlal Empire. One of the slaves living there is battling a disease known as planetary compatibility disorder. He must return home to a distant planet Earth to be cured. His daughter Irina, also a slave, is devastated by her father’s illness and powerless to do anything about it.

At that moment, a humanoid named Geni, who looks strangely like a frog, appears in front of Irina and says: “I came from the 30-year future. A galactic war is about to break out in which more than 5,000 planets will be destroyed. Harlal Empire. I came during this period of time to stop this war and the despotic rule of the Harlal Empire. I need your help”.

“Why me? What can I do?”, Irina had no idea what was going on, but her father’s illness was getting worse by the minute. With no time to hesitate and nowhere else to turn, she takes Genie’s green hand and sets off, starting her journey to reach his distant home planet, destroying the Harlal Empire once and for all.

Game features

The most distinctive feature of this game is the “reflector”, a feature of DRAINUS that allows the ship to absorb energy-based enemy fire for a certain period of time during activation, before allowing you to release it back in a devastating counterattack.

The absorbed energy is also stored in a reservoir that can be used to tweak and enhance various DRAINUS features.
