I confess I had no idea until yesterday Fire Emblem Heroes was still active and updated. But many people still play the game and obviously spend money on it too. New data show that Fire Emblem Heroes just hit $1 billion in revenue, becoming the first Nintendo mobile game to do so.
First released in 2017, Fire Emblem Heroes is a free tactical RPG where players collect various characters from the past Fire Emblem games and use them to complete missions and battles. And according to new data Sensor Towerhe has now earned over $1 billion, earning nearly $30 million this year alone.
Not only is it the first Nintendo mobile game to do so, but it is by far the most financially successful mobile game ever. Actually, Fire Emblem brought in more than all the rest of Nintendo’s mobile games combined. If you take a lifetime income from all these games, for example Mario Kart Tour as well as Super Mario Run, and add them together and you have a respectable $883 million. Beautiful, but still less than a billion.
Fire Emblem Heroes is one of Nintendo’s old mobile developments, it’s only the second real development aimed at phones (except – and I don’t count –now dead Miitomo, which looked more like a social app). So the company has had almost five years to put together its big treasure chest, but that’s still impressive compared to how relatively poorly other Nintendo mobile games have fared. 2019 Dr. Mario Worldfor example, has made less than $15 million to date, and usually doctors make money.
I wonder if he made a lot of money Fire Emblem Heroes is not Nintendo’s most downloaded mobile game. It would be Super Mario Run, which has amassed over 310 million lifetime downloads. Compared, Heroes only about 18 million. You can be sure that Nintendo is taking notes on this.
Of course, compared to other popular mobile games, a billion in five years is pretty slow. PUBG Mobilewhich was launched in 2018, made over two billion last year alonelike open world RPG Genshin Impact. But a billion dollars is a billion dollars. Hell, I’d take a billion dollars in five years. I’m just saying.
Concerning The Future of Nintendo in Mobile Gaming, doesn’t look good. Last released game was Mario Kart Tour in 2019. Since then, it seems that the company has shifted its focus elsewhere. This makes sense to me. If you have a console as popular as the Switch, why would you keep making free games for the iPhone? With such fierce competition in the mobile space, it seems much safer to stick with a hugely successful bespoke console that you actually control.
