While nowadays it’s always about “what other Wii U games can we get on the Switch”, perhaps at an earlier age the playground kids were talking about “what other Game Boy games can we get for the Color?” . Okay, maybe not, but it’s an interesting thought; Of course, online communities of enthusiasts and modders aren’t just wondering out loud what native versions of classic Game Boy Color games will look like.
Sites like Romhacking.net have modders taking on interesting projects, including DX entries in the Super Mario Land series. The first two games have already been completed Toruzzand now Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 has undergone the same DX treatment, this time by the user korho. Our member Gonçalo Lopes played it and made a video at the top of the page.
Below is a description of the modder giving an idea of the work on the previous two DX mods for this series:
This hack was used to colorize the first entry in the Wario Land series.
It doesn’t have the quality of Mario Land’s color hacks, but it’s still better than the monochrome version.
It does not work on the monochrome Game Boy, only on the Game Boy Color.
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 actually supported the limited color palette feature included with the Game Boy Color, although this mod specifically targets the “DX” look many of us know from The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX.
It’s fun to see this sort of project coming together, giving a glimpse of what might have been if Nintendo had paid more attention to releasing “DX” in the Game Boy era – many games had to make do with the Super Game Boy color palettes, of course.
